Croatia to introduce personal and company ID number vs. corruption
17 March 2008
The Ministry of Finance and Tax Administration decided to fight corruption by introducing the personal ID number for each citizen and company in Croatia. The assigning of PIDs will start on January 1, 2009, announced the Ministry at the presentation of the draft law on the personal ID number.
PIDs will consist of randomly selected 11 digits and "HR" for Croatia and it will be connected to all the data on property owned by individuals and companies in Croatia. The PID will be used for connection and exchange of data from official records, which will enable the tracking of property and cross-referencing with the taxes paid.
Minister of Finance Ivan Suker says the number will enable the authorities to follow the trail of money, this reducing possibilities of fraud. Chief State Prosecutor Mladen Bajic and Minister of Justice Ana Lovrin add that the PID will create more order in the tax and legal systems.
