From next year no restrictions for foreigners buying real estate
21 July 2008
From next year European Union citizens will be able to buy real estate in Croatia without any restrictions, gaining equal rights as Croatian citizens have. Restrictions will remain in force only for non-EU residents.
On February 1, 2009, the contract from Croatia’s negotiating positions for the chapter Free Movement of Capital comes into force. Foreign minister Gordan Jandrokovic sent it to president of the National Committee for Monitoring EU Negotiations Vesna Pusic in May. In the negotiations, only Malta succeeded in getting special restrictions for real estate trading.
Following Poland’s example, Croatia wants a transitional 12-year period after EU accession. Up until now, foreigners were buying real estate by founding companies in Croatia or through their acquaintances. As of next year, the purchase will be made even simpler, as it will be open to natural persons as well.
